Calibrating Your Printer Probe

Use the following 5 steps to calibrate your printer. You will run through the steps, begin a print, then evaluate that print’s quality before making any changes. Please note: you may not need to make these changes right away.

  1. Download the 3mm box from Printrbot.
  2. Print the 3mm box.
  3. If your print is stringy:
    1. Lower your Z value
  4. If your print is smooshed:
    1. Raise your Z value
  5. Repeat steps 2-5 until you have a good first layer.

Lower your Z Value (Stringy Prints)

If your prints look like the photo below, your probe is probably too high.  Follow the steps below the photo to lower your Z Probe.

  1. Load the 3mm box into MatterControl.
  2. Click the “Settings & Controls” button.
  3. Click the “Options” tab.
  4. Click the “Show Terminal” button
  5. In the terminal window, make sure the filters are checked:
  6. Type the command M501 in the command area and press Enter on your keyboard.
  7. M501 will give you the current settings for your probe.
  8. Look for the M212 setting and specifically, the Z value in the output:
  9. In this window, my setting is Z-0.60
  10. To raise your probe, you need to lower your Z value setting.  Pay special attention when the value is negative.
  11. I’m going to set my new value to Z-0.7.  You want to change the value in increments so you don’t damage your printer.
  12. To set a new value, type the command M212 followed by your new value, so in my case, I would want to type:
    M212 Z-0.6
    Press enter on your keyboard
  13. Now you need to save the new value.  type M500 and press Enter to save the value.
  14. It should reply back that your settings were saved:
  15. Close the Terminal window by clicking the “Close” button.
  16. Print the 3mm box again to test your new settings.
  17. Repeat steps 2-16 until you are happy with your results.
