Be The Light Lantern Party
The Makerettes were faced with a challenge: What can we do for our community?
Makerettes is an all female-identifying maker group at Digital Harbor Foundation. The group serves to support female makers, allowing them to come together and learn new skills. Before Makerettes, DHF had a 5% female participation in our programs compared to nearly 50% now.
This group is currently working on their solution to build a better Baltimore with little project they like to call, “Be the Light.” The Makerettes are fabricating unique tea-light lanterns for a cause.
To start, Makerettes use Inkscape, a vector-based design software, to create unique patterns for the lanterns. Then, they send their designs to our laser cutter. Next, the Makerettes assemble the individual pieces to create their lantern. The best part is that the group is selling the lanterns and donating the proceeds to a local charity.
Makerettes selected House of Ruth Maryland to be the recipient of the donation. House of Ruth is a non-profit organization fighting against domestic abuse. The Makerettes fell in love with House of Ruth’s mission and their dedication to women and children. The organization works to provide food, shelter, counseling, legal and other services to victims. You can visit their page and donate directly here.
The Makerettes are hosting a launch event for Be the Light on December 13th from 6:30 – 8:30pm. We’re inviting all makers looking to be a part of something bigger. Join us to paint your very own lantern! You can take it home or donate it to DHF.
We will display the lanterns in our courtyard to share Be the Light with Baltimore. The Makerettes are very excited to have the community join them in their mission!
To participate on the 13th, claim your lantern here.
