Setup and Supplies

Stomp rockets are an easy project for youth of any age that are comfortable cutting with scissors. There aren’t many supplies needed.

DHF stomp rocket template

Build Time:

Approximately 30-40 minutes.

Skills Needed:

  • Ability to use scissors.
  • Ability to use packing tape (this can be troublesome for tiny fingers and there’s also sharp teeth on the dispenser)

  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Glue Stick (optional)
  • 1/2″ PVC pipe cut into 12″ lengths to use as a “mold”

How to Assemble a Stomp Rocket

Step 1: Cut the Template

Begin by cutting all of the pieces out of the template.

Step 2: Check Your Pieces

You should have the following template pieces: Body Tube, 4x Fins, Fin Guide, Nose Cone, Pressure Cap.

Step 3: Color the Pieces

Color the pieces however you like. Have fun decorating!

Step 4: Form the Rocket

Wrap the body tube around the 1/2″ PVC pipe and tape it to form a tube.  Be careful not to tape the paper to the PVC, you will need to remove the PVC from inside the paper before launching.

Step 5: Cover the Body Tube

Cover the body tube in clear packing tape.  This will provide the body of the rocket with a little rigidity.

Step 6: Tape the Pressure Cap

Tape the pressure cap to the top of one end of the body tube. Make sure that there aren’t any spots where the air can escape.

Step 7: Fold the Nose

Fold the nose cone along the dotted lines. You can optionally use a glue stick on the nose cone. In my experience (and haste), the nose cone has been fine without the glue.

Step 8: Tape the Nose

Tape the nose cone to the top of the rocket (on top of the pressure cap).

Step 9: Fold the Fins

Fold each fin. Try to experiment with different folds for the fins!

Step 10: (Optional) Add More Fins

You can choose to use 3 or 4 fins on your rocket.  Tape the Fin Guide to the bottom of your rocket and then tape the fins in place aligning the fins with the lines on the Fin Guide to match either 3 or 4 fins.

Step 11: Launch!

You are now ready for launching!
